Amber (brown) and cobalt glass protects the contents from light, which matters for essential oils and substances sensitive to UV radiation. Clear glass bottles make it easy to check the liquid level, while plastic is lighter and shatterproof.

Pay attention to the type of closure: a glass pipette with a rubber bulb lets you measure drops precisely, and a dropper in the cap makes one-handed dosing easier. Check whether the material is resistant to the stored liquid, e.g. alcohol or oil, and whether the bottles can be sterilized with boiling water. Bottles with a child-resistant cap are useful for storing substances that should not fall into the wrong hands.
