Bouygues Telecom TV Box media player TV tuner

Bouygues Telecom TV Box media player TV tuner.

The Bbox Miami is offered by Bouygues for both xDSL and Fiber customers. It is a small square box measuring just 15 cm by 4 cm, which we have already explored inside and out in our news items The Bbox Miami seen from the inside . In short, it is built around a passively cooled Marvell Armada 1500 Pro SoC (4 Cortex A9 cores at 1.2 GHz) - so no noise is emitted during operation.

Unlike the Freebox Mini 4K, which handles ultra high resolution, the video stream handled by the Bbox Miami is limited to 1080p60. A problem that is not a problem in 2015, when the fleet of UHD TVs is quite small, as is the content limited to a few series and films offered by Netflix. The situation should change next year, however, with the arrival of Ultra HD Blu-ray and various UHD content (sport, films and series), for example on Canal +. With a small case - Bouygues wanted to offer something small - it is no surprise that you are dealing with minimalist connections. A pair of HDMI 1.4 and an optical audio output are part of the package, as are an Ethernet network socket and an antenna input. Like Free, Bouygues did not see fit to add an antenna output. Those who want to use the DTT signal on their TV or another device are therefore obliged to go through a splitter or an amplifier with multiple outputs.

On one of the edges there is an SD card reader and the only USB 2.0 port present. It is stingy; we would have liked to find at least two of them. As things stand, it is impossible to connect a classic wireless keyboard and mouse set and a USB key at the same time. You then have to use a USB hub or Bluetooth input devices. Bouygues also supplied this box with Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11n at 450 Mb s). Even so, the internet service provider restricts access to TV channels when the wireless network is active. Only streaming channels are available (lower quality than IPTV reception), i.e. 70 channels instead of 163 for a wired connection. Playback of services and video on demand is also reduced. The display definition is detected automatically when the device is switched on. However, manual adjustment lets you force a particular definition. It is also possible to fine-tune the image cropping so that it matches the entire display area. The audio output can be set to stereo PCM (audio decoding done by the device) or to passthrough for sending to an audio amplifier.
