Everything that has a beginning also has an end. Every story has one. Some great epics have a disappointing finale, others have a fitting ending. And the third coup by Peter Jackson in terms of The Lord of the Rings belongs among the latter.

After the two previous parts, there was really no need to worry that the actors were not good enough or that the special effects left much to be desired. You are magnificent. That is why the most exciting question about The Return of the King was how the New Zealand nobleman hobbit Jackson would prepare the most complex part of the story and plot in a way suited to the screen. Likewise, The Return of the King became a story that unfolds in the field of tension between great battles and great emotions for about 200 minutes: on one hand, Aragorn must finally face his royal destiny and gather all his strength to distract Sauron from the nervous search for the One Ring by the Ring-bearer. Because Frodo needs time to make his way across the plain of Gorgoroth with Sam and the increasingly treacherous Gollum, past Minas Morgul and Shelob, and finally reach the place where Elrond once tried to cast the Ring from Isildur in the first bitter attempt, saw failure by fire: the cracks of doom. The place where the fate of all involved is fulfilled.

As a viewer, you are taken on an emotional roller coaster ride by this film. On one hand, the viewer is treated to three superbly staged battles whose force fortunately pushes them back into the cinema seat. On the other hand, you follow Frodo's increasingly overwhelming suffering - and you almost run out of breath yourself. And then there is that long, painful farewell. Somehow you get a reluctant feeling that in the end it is not only the companions who have to say goodbye to each other and partly to Middle-earth, but also to you.

Has Peter Jackson become a sadist at heart after a good seven years of living with Middle-earth, when he celebrates his farewell so intensely? Not at all. But certainly one who pays homage to another great trilogy with the Battle of the Pelennor Fields: George Lucas's original Star Saga. When the mighty oliphaunts appear before Theoden's stunned men, it is reminiscent of the Imperial AT war machines that attacked the rebels on the ice planet Hoth in "The Empire Strikes Back". Thank you Peter! — Konstanze Pappert
