Conversion kits let you turn a traditional bike into an electric-assist bike. In this category you will find kits with a motor in the front or rear wheel hub and with a mid-drive motor, as well as sets including a controller, display, pedal sensor and wiring.

Before buying, check whether the kit fits your bike: the wheel size, the width of the fork or rear triangle, the type of brakes, the diameter of the seat tube and the type of bottom bracket. The voltage and capacity of the battery, which affect the range, and the way it is mounted on the frame or rack are also important.

Installation requires basic technical knowledge and bicycle tools, so people without experience can leave it to a service shop. Remember that a bike used on public roads must meet the regulations in force, including those concerning the motor power and the speed up to which the assist works.
