PIR sensor.

PIR stands for passive infrared or pyroelectric infrared. PIR sensors can be defined as detectors of warm-bodied objects in motion. A stationary target cannot be detected. To detect a moving target, its surface temperature must differ significantly from the ambient temperature. Although the usual targets of a PIR detector are warm-bodied (mammals, birds), a PIR sensor will also detect a moving target whose surface temperature is much lower than the ambient temperature. As long as the target is large enough and its surface temperature is detectably different from the ambient temperature (higher or lower) - and the target is moving - it can be detected by a PIR sensor.

Microwave sensor.

A microwave sensor detects motion on the principle of Doppler radar, similar to a speed radar. It sends out microwave pulses and measures the reflection from moving objects. They cover a larger area than infrared sensors, but are more susceptible to electrical interference. Microwave motion detectors differ from PIR motion sensors in that they are active devices. They emit energy and look for the frequency shift (Doppler) caused by motion in the covered area. A microwave motion sensor sends out high-frequency radio waves and then detects the level of energy reflected back to the device. If the radio wave hits a moving object, the frequency changes and the motion sensor is triggered.
