The audio signal on an MD is compressed in the ATRAC format, whereas a CD uses the 16-bit PCM format. While in the early days of MD on the market the sound quality was easy to distinguish from CD quality, thanks to the development of ATRAC today this difference is very hard to hear. The latest version of ATRAC introduced by Sony is ATRAC type S; Sharp and Panasonic use their own, but fully compatible, ATRAC codecs.

Over time, MD technology was enriched with additional recording formats. They are known as MDLP (MiniDisc Long Play) and use the new ATRAC3 recording format. In addition to the standard CD-quality format, now often called SP, MDLP adds the LP2 mode, which allows a doubling of recording time (160 minutes, or 2 h 40 min, on an 80-minute disc) of good-quality sound, and LP4, with a four times longer recording time (320 minutes, or 5 h 20 min, on an 80-minute disc) of medium-quality sound.
