A properly furnished terrarium helps recreate the natural environment of a reptile, amphibian or arachnid. The type of substrate is chosen to suit the species: animals from desert regions need a dry, sandy substrate, and tropical species a moist substrate that holds humidity well. Decorations should be stable, without sharp edges and made of materials safe for animals. Hides are worth placing in both the warmer and the cooler zone of the terrarium.

Before buying, check the dimensions of the terrarium so that the background and decorations fit its interior and do not limit the space to move around. The substrate should be replaced periodically and contaminants removed from it, and decorations washed without detergents that could harm the terrarium's inhabitants.
