Compact disc of the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers DVD

The bondage of the Ring continues - and how! After the brilliant overture of The Fellowship of the Ring, director Peter Jackson sets the stage for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: more orcs, more parades, more darkness, Ents, Gollum, winged Nazgul, oliphaunts and the Battle of Helm's Deep, which has real power. Tolkien's students asked themselves many, many questions after the superb adaptation of the first part of The Lord of the Rings: will Peter Jackson at least manage to preserve the splendor of The Fellowship of the Ring? What do the Ents look like? Do you like Gollum? And what would you have changed? Questions upon questions, which finally have an answer.

The dear companions have been scattered by Saruman's Uruk-hai. Now that Frodo and Sam have set out alone on the fateful road to Mordor, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli follow the trail of orcs fleeing toward Isengard. In the end, the unfortunate hobbits Pippin and Merry are in their clutches. And they want to get the pair back. When Frodo and Sam, with almost physical effort, capture Gollum and make him their guide, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli join forces again with the Balrog - Gandalf's memory of his fight with the Balrog is just one of the many fortunately magnificent moments of the film. The wizards' escape, ride to Rohan and accompany King Theoden, freed from Saruman's influence, in the Battle of Helm's Deep. Besides that, Sauron is gathering his many armies, one thing is certain: the Battle for Middle-earth has finally begun. And Frodo? The wretched hobbit begins to feel the influence of the Ring more and more, which leads to ever greater conflicts.

Of course, the middle part of a story is always the hardest to realize: plot threads must be continued, characters developed, or even introduced anew. Thanks to screenwriter Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson has masterfully overcome all these pitfalls. With Bernhard Hill as Theoden of Rohan, Miranda Otto as his niece Eowyn, David Wenham as Faramir of Gondor and of course Brad Dourif known as Grima Wormtongue, the dream team from New Zealand once again has a superb cast.

But the real stars are those that came straight out of the computer and were probably the most eagerly awaited by fans: the Ents, the winged Nazgul and of course Gollum. As for the Ents, it can be said that the shepherds of the trees were staged very impressively and convincingly. It is a pity that their role in particular was extremely shortened and partly changed. But the need to make The Two Towers compatible with a three-hour theatrical version clearly required a sacrifice here. But with Gollum and the Nazgul you simply want to kiss the director and concept artist Alan Lee. Gollum himself seems so real on his own and in interaction with others that at some point you really stop perceiving him as a virtual being. And then that battle! It takes up a good quarter of the plot. It is worth every minute. Without overdoing it too much, the Battle of Helm's Deep looks exactly as it should. No more, but no less.

Conclusion? The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is coherent in itself, despite or precisely because of the sometimes very clear changes from the literary original - which we will not discuss further for the sake of suspense. Necessarily more monumental and gloomy than The Fellowship of the Ring, Jackson does a great job of depicting the turning point of a world whose future seems buried in ruin. Well, Peter, now we are waiting furiously for the finale! --Konstanze Quanz
