Garmin GHP Reactor 40 Corepack – autopilot with GHC 50 control unit

The GHP Reactor 40 is a Garmin autopilot that takes over holding the course and steering the boat along a planned route, so the helmsman can focus on watching the surroundings, fishing or looking after the crew. The Corepack version is a set of basic control components for vessels with a mechanical steering system or hydraulics controlled by solenoid valves. The actuator unit – a mechanical drive or a set of valves – is selected separately, according to the steering system of the specific boat.

What the autopilot can do

• holds a set course, relieving the helmsman on longer passages,
• steers the boat along a route or to a point set on a compatible Garmin chartplotter,
• runs steering patterns, such as zigzag or circling around a point, useful for fishing and searching,
• uses the AHRS heading and attitude sensor in the control unit, which helps hold a steady course in waves.

GHC 50 control unit

The set includes the GHC 50 control unit with a 3.5-inch color display that is readable even in full sun. From it you switch on the autopilot, adjust the course and select operating modes. The autopilot can also be operated from compatible Garmin chartplotters connected to it via an NMEA 2000 network.

Installation

Installing the autopilot requires connecting it to the steering system, power and the onboard network, followed by calibration on the water. It is best entrusted to an experienced marine electronics service, which will also select the right actuator unit.
