Gates T38427 - serpentine (multi-rib) belt tensioner
The Gates drive belt tensioner is part of the engine accessory drive, whose job is to maintain constant tension on the multi-rib belt driving the alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor and water pump. A properly working tensioner ensures quiet engine operation and even transfer of drive to all accessory components.
Function and construction
The automatic tensioner uses a spring and a damping element (usually a hydraulic or friction damper) that compensate for belt stretch during service life and for vibrations arising at varying engine speeds. As a result the belt does not slip on the pulleys, which prevents noise and premature wear.
Signs of wear
- Squealing or grinding of the accessory belt, especially on a cold engine
- Visible vibration of the tensioner arm while the engine is running
- Play in the tensioner pulley bearing
- Premature wear of the drive belt itself
Installation
Replacing the tensioner requires releasing the belt tension with a torque wrench or a special service tool, removing the old part and installing the new one to the tightening torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. It is recommended to replace the drive belt at the same time if it shows signs of wear.
