Garmin GRF 10 – rudder position sensor for autopilot
The Garmin GRF 10 is a rudder feedback sensor that tells the autopilot system the current rudder angle of the boat. The device uses a magnetic sensor, so there is no direct mechanical contact that causes extra wear, which sets it apart from older potentiometer-based solutions.
Working with the autopilot
The sensor is mounted on the rudder shaft, and its arm connects mechanically to the boat's steering system, passing position information to the autopilot control unit, for example the Garmin GHP 12. This way the autopilot knows exactly which way and how far the rudder is turned at any moment.
Safety and maneuvering precision
Knowing the exact rudder position helps avoid over-correction during maneuvers and reduces unnecessary load on the steering mechanism. The solution improves safety when setting off from a stop and when maneuvering at low speeds and in more difficult conditions on the water.
