BGS 9669 – compression tester for petrol engines

A workshop compression tester that lets you assess the condition of the rings, valves and head gasket. The engine compression measurement is taken in each cylinder after removing the spark plugs – large differences between cylinders point to a fault before the engine is even dismantled.

Set

• analog pressure gauge 0–20 bar (0–300 psi) with a pressure release valve,
• connecting hose with a quick coupler,
• straight and angled measuring tube with a rubber cone,
• spark plug thread adapters M10, M12, M14 and M18,
• plastic case.

How to measure

Warm the engine up to operating temperature, remove the spark plugs, switch off the ignition and injection, screw in the adapter and crank the engine with the starter for several revolutions with the throttle open. The release valve lets you hold the reading and vent the pressure before the next measurement.

The correct compression pressure for a given engine is specified by the manufacturer. The BGS 9669 set is also handy when buying a used car.
